Culture & History of Salvador de Bahia
That was last April and as you know from our recent post about daily life we’re still here! A famous seaport on the south coast of El Salvador, Acajutla is a South American city filled with leafy suburbs, galleries, museums and walking trails that meander through the recently planted city greenery. Dive into the cultural markets and experience a taste of the real El Salvador and explore its rich coffee and sugar-marking history. The handful of cruise lines that visit El Salvador during Panama Canal or westbound post-Canal sailings primarily stop at the country's main seaport, Acajutla, a massive industrial port on the Pacific Ocean.

Cruises to Salvador de Bahia, Brazil
You’ll be welcomed by sweeping, panoramic views of the Bay of All Saints below. Overlooking the scenic Bay of All Saints on the tip of Salvador is Porto da Barra Beach, a swimming and surfing hotspot known for its calm waters. The deep yellow sands are smooth, not rocky, making it easy to lay out a blanket and tan in the sun. After you’ve had your fill of fun, grab a bite and a cold drink at one of the oceanfront restaurants and bars. On some of these cruises you have the option to book just the cruise only. These include several nights stay in a hotel or a land tour before or after your cruise.
Acajutla, El Salvador

It is a well-known location for divers who come from all around to flock to the resort to enjoy a long diving tour. Nearby are opportunities to take chartered fishing boats, high-flying canopy tours, and walking tours of the Izalco Volcano. Salvador has a vast system of buses and a metro used often by locals.

Amazing experiences coming soon
For visitors interested in Mayan culture, a visit to Joya de Cerén, located just 74 kilometers away from Acajutla is a "must". Joya de Cerén is one of the most important sites for Mayan civilization, where visitors can see the remains of a farming village, conserved intact under layers of volcanic ash. Known locally for the famous food of Pupusa, round cornmeal tortillas stuffed with cheese, refried beans, sweet potato, herbs and pork. You’ll find an abundance of these local establishments in the coastal town and villages of El Salvador. Wash it all down with a traditional drink like licuados or chilate. El Salvador, officially the Republic of El Salvador, is a country in Central America.
The changing menu utilizes local ingredients, all imagined from the creative genius of its chef, Hugo Ribeiro. Art lovers will be enamored by Salvador’s Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, which is visited by over 200,000 visitors each year from all corners of the world. Contemporary art by Brazilian artists is just the beginning at MAM-BA. Sandwiched on the hilly coast in Dois de Julho, the museum is also known for its spectacular waterside views. This historical landmark is a must-see for anyone visiting Porto da Barra Beach and the surrounding areas.

Your cruise ship will dock at the Porto de Salvador, which is the third-largest port in all of Brazil. The port is situated on the eastern end of Salvador, where you’ll be met by views of the Bay of All Saints. The Tourist Terminal is equipped with a bathroom and a snack bar. Once you disembark, you’ll be only a few minutes’ walk from the Mercato Modelo and the city center. If you want to explore a fascinating country, this is the place.
Book with confidence
The Acajutla port is an industrial port; cruise passengers are not permitted to walk beyond the length of the ship. A courtesy shuttle is provided to take passengers to the nearby Acajutla beach, as well as a small craft market and playground. The craft market -- which consists of local vendors selling a variety of handmade craft items like sandals and jewelry mixed in with T-shirts, shot glasses and more -- is usually open for several hours after the ship first arrives. Passengers hoping to hit the market after a morning tour might be disappointed to find most sellers have already departed by the time the tours get back. Refreshments including ice cream, cold drinks and pupusa (soft, thick corn tortillas filled with cheese and other ingredients) are sold at the craft market.

From finding the right destination to choosing the best departure date, we're here to help. Plus, our experienced travel consultants have access to exclusive vacation deals to make sure you get the best value for your time and money. Acajutla, on the west coast, has some of the most modern cruise port facilities in Central American.
We thought we’d probably make it to Panama for the hurricane season. In Huatulco and Chiapas, our last two stops in Mexico, we kept hearing other boats talking about the Annual El Salvador Rally and on an impulse we decided to check it out. We sent off a quick email, signed up as we were leaving Chiapas, and arrived here a few days later.
Taxis are common in the area surrounding the Salvador cruise port. If you’re looking to go beyond the historic district, you’ll want to make transportation plans via taxi or bus before you head to the nearby beaches, or book a shore excursion. From a visiros perspective, arrival in the port includes a special welcoming performance. In the port itself, guests have access to a park and recreation area with beach access that is specially designated for cruise ship passengers. However, there are many other options in the way of shore excursions, including the Flower Route, a visit to the capital city of San Salvador and a visit to ancient Maya ruins.
It’s small enough that you can easily visit most of the country in a week. You can hire a car through the hotel and see beaches, volcanoes, archaeological sites, lakes, rivers, mountains, museums, and thermal springs in a few days. People have also had great experiences using this as a base for land travel throughout Central America. In Part 2 I’ll write about all our favourite places, both local hangouts and places to explore further afield, and how to easily get around. Three volcanic islands form an archipelago just off the coastline where visitors can explore lush vegetation, deserted beaches, fishing and a variety of other activities. Another option is to head to La Union's nearby mountain towns, getting to know local traditions, culture and customs.
We’ve made friends with so many of the staff and loved our time at the dock. Wifi at the hotel is usually reasonable quality – it’s good in the restaurant, bar, and pool and the nearest docks. For the outer docks you probably need a wifi extender to pick it up. There can be quite a bit of wake from weekend party boats and it can get a bit noisy when there are groups doing karaoke! There’s a weekly membership fee for pool use, discounted laundry service, and bar & restaurant discounts. Even if you’re not staying at the marina, you can do the membresía and access the facilities.
This secluded and often overlooked location is a hubbub of life for adventurous surfers, coffee farms galore, rainforests with glistening waterfalls and vibrant towns and villages that are dotted across its dramatic lands. Centuries before colonization by Portuguese explorers, the capital city of Salvador was the home of indigenous people like the Gé and the Tupinambá. In 1549, the Portuguese arrived at the Bay of All Saints and founded what we now know as Salvador de Bahia. Today, it’s famous for its historic center and unique music, culture, and dance. For a high-end experience in Salvador de Bahia, there’s Sanctuarium Atelier Gourmet. This contemporary restaurant is known for its experimental dishes, extensive wine list, and award-winning multi-course dining.
With a variety of impressive cruise excursions, it's easy to see why El Salvador's ports of call are becoming more popular. There is little to see at the port itself, though the El Salvadoran tourist board has created a small park and craft market on site for cruisers to check out via a courtesy shuttle. There is no town within walking distance, so cruisers interested in touring the region will need to book an excursion, either through the cruise line or a private tour operator. Port Acajutla cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Acajutla, El Salvador. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.
